CIRS Shoemaker Protocol Step #3

As we covered in the last few blogs… you’ve caught onto the idea that chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) and erythromelalgia (EM) are related. You’ve learned that the first step in recovery from CIRS and therefore EM is removal from exposure. This can mean moving away from or remediating a moldy home but can have other implications if something other than mold is driving illness.  You learned that the second step in treatment is taking a binder to remove the toxin that your immune system can’t see and remove itself.  This is typically a prescription of either colesevelam or cholestyramine. What’s the next step? Let’s continue to walk through the steps of CIRS treatment together. It’s a lot to take in. The good news is that it is the job of your CIRS savvy medical provider to walk you through the steps. Nonetheless, it helps to understand the ‘why’ behind the wonky things you are being asked to do.

So, you failed the VCS test and were worked up for CIRS. Your positive blood markers resulted in a diagnosis. Now treatment will involve taking the CIRS protocol step-by-step. The first step is removal from exposure. The next step is to start a binder. Now what?

Step #3- ERADICATING BIOFILM FORMING MARCoNS

The next move in the protocol includes testing for, and if necessary, treating multiple antibiotic resistant coagulase negative staphylococci (MARCoNS). If MARCoNS are suspected, a deep nasal culture will need to be obtained. This can easily and surprisingly be done from the comfort of your home. If a moderate or large amount of MARCoNS are present deep within the nasal passages, the body’s ability to produce normal levels of melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) is impaired. This is a problem because adequate levels of MSH are pivotal in recovery from the biotoxin-induced illness of CIRS. You can expect treatment of MARCoNS to involve using a compounded nasal spray called “EDTA” 3 times daily for 3-6 months. Repeat re-culturing of the nasal passages will be required in make sure that MARCoNS are a thing of the past.

Why go to all the trouble? MARCoNS drive down MSH which is linked to fatigue, pain, mood swings, non-restful sleep, and so much more.

Anything else to know? The use of antifungals is linked to drug resistance as well as other undesirable changes in the brain. Antifungals should be avoided. Antifungals have no business in the treatment of CIRS.
