Toxic mold exposure?

I am a nurse practitioner that suffered for years from Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) caused by living in a water damaged building. I am here to tell you-

There is hope. Lots of it.

There is a lot of bad information out there on mold illness. Don’t waste any more time, money, or energy! Insist on evidence-based treatment by a medical provider trained directly by Dr. Shoemaker.

May my journey of healing,

Inform your journey of healing.

“You are not lazy, unmotivated, or stuck. After years of living your life in survival mode, you are exhausted. There is a difference. ”

— As seen written on a post-it note on Facebook

So, you are suspicious- or maybe unshakable in your knowing- that mold is negatively impacting your health.

You are surviving toxic mold exposure.

As you try to find answers, there are so many conflicting opinions. Does Mayo Clinic have it wrong? Is biotoxin illness characterized by exposure to waterdamaged buildings a thing? It sure feels like more than just an allergy [1]. And what exactly is this progressive multisystem multisymptom illness called Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) that can affect virtually every organ system in your body via ongoing inflammation [2]? You learn that CIRS attacks the body’s innate immune system creating a plethora of health problems making diagnosis difficult, because it affects each person in different ways. While some CIRS patients suffer from abdominal pain, post nasal drip, night sweats, unexplained weight gain, excessive thirst, food allergies, or a metallic taste in their mouths, other common symptoms include muscle cramps, cognitive difficulties, mood swings, chemical sensitivities, sore throat, static shocks, or frequent urination. The bottom line is that due to such such varied symptoms at presentation, it takes a highly trained eye and a battery of blood work that is rarely ordered by traditional medical providers to give a proper diagnosis. Further complicating the picture, some patients have been diagnosed with a myriad of chronic health issues such as lyme disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, or psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, or post traumatic stress disorder. CIRS plays a key role in the perpetuation of the symptoms of these chronic health challenges. Left untreated environmentally acquired illnesses can devastate. Who knew water damage or a little mold growth cleaned away by Clorox could cause serious illness? This is scary stuff, but do not despair. As a healthcare provider, I can tell you that you are nearing answers- finding root causes- and therefore healing.

Maybe you’ve already begun to worship at the feet of acclaimed CIRS “mold god’ Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker [3]. You are becoming aware of, and a bit confused by, his underappreciated and deeply impactful research on CIRS. You learn that there is a 17 year gap between the publication of scientific evidence and its translation into patient care [4]. This is maddening!

You’ve already lost so much of your life…you are not willing to give up a moment more.

Your heart sinks when you determine that only a scant few providers are knowledgeable in Dr. Shoemaker’s groundbreaking, life altering CIRS protocol [5]. You want in… now! You note that there is not a certified practitioner in your area, but heck, you’d be willing to travel to New York- or better yet Timbuktu- to heal. You reach out to one, and then many, of the Shoemaker certified practitioners only to learn that the wait to be seen is extremely long- 6 months, even years. Your heart sinks further. I know you are disappointed, but I’m here to tell you it’s worth the wait. With his beautiful step-by-step plan, you will take your health back as I did…and this was after all the kings horses and all the kings men at Mayo Clinic couldn’t put Dr. Sparks back together again. You say, “ I want to get started yesterday”. Excellent! Can’t wait to get started? Get on our schedule, and in the meantime, work with a CIRS savvy coach so that you are ahead of the curve when you meet with Dr. Sparks. We have worked to attain accreditation by First Nations Medical Board (FNMB) so that we can legally treat suffering CIRS patients across state lines. This is why we are a “membership only” medical practice

Let the healing begin!

I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I am also a mold survivor. I’ve walked this path. Everyone on my team has also suffered from this exact illness. We are here to hold your hand and direct you around the potholes I initially plummeted into. How do you know if you are genetically predisposed to mold illness? What is an innate immune system? How do you test accurately for mold at home and work? What do the testing results mean? What is the deal with mold remediation, and how do you avoid costly mistakes? What in the world is visual contrast sensitivity? What changes can be made to improve your health? If your brain is on fire- as Dr. Mary Ackerley posits, can you stop the cognitive decline and improve brain health? Are natural binders helpful, as Dr. Jill Carnahan suggests [6]? What do you possibly make of the alphabet soup of ERMI, HERTSM-I, VCS test, HLA-DR, MARCONS, VOCs, MSH, MMP-9, TGF Beta-1, C4a, VEGF, and VIP? Do not despair! We’ve got you covered in all this and more. In addition, we use functional psychiatry and narrative therapy training to teach you to send your body a much needed signal of safety. Your body has been stuck in fight, flight, or freeze for a very long time.

Your body in a very real sense has forgotten what it is like to be safe, because it was not safe.

It is highly likely you were invalidated by many in the medical community in your search for answers. You are now taking your power back. You are healing not just from the insult of mycotoxins, but you are grieving a great deal of lost life. Your sense of identity and relationships have been shaken. You’ve suffered expansive losses that others just don’t understand.

I’d like to say “I get it” because I’m a therapist, but the truth is I understand because I have lived it. The beauty of this whole terrible disaster is that life is truer on the other side. My journey with mold illness was my “dark night” lasting for years. It was also my entry point into profound wellness and a life that is truer, brighter, and deeper.

How can I help you to truer, brighter, deeper?

Every member of my team has lived-experience of CIRS. We work to share our hard-won wisdom with you in an affordable way. We pass along tips, tricks, education, and materials that have been helpful to us as we’ve walked the road toward healing. The upside to engaging in treatment now is that learning to send your body a signal of safety benefits you for a lifetime. And you’ve got a lot of life left to live!

Due to my training as a therapist, I am also comfortable addressing the very real psychological effects of living with chronic conditions and the accompanying grief associated with all of the untold losses. I believe in the healing power of finding ways forward within a compassionate community. That is why we’ve also create a low cost community support circle. We’d love for you to join us.

CIRS can be hell for those who love us. They don’t know how to support us well. And how could they? To meet this need, I am always open to having your loved ones sit in on our calls. I am here to support your support team!

No person will be more motivated to help you heal from a disease than one who themselves has it.

It would be my pleasure to walk this road with you towards healing and vibrant health. As one of my favorite authors Kate Bowler says, “Let’s be human together”. Reach out to schedule an appointment.
