Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome and Erythromelalgia

You already have a mouthful of a diagnosis- the ridiculously hard to pronounce erythromelalgia- and now I am throwing around another elaborate disease called Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome?! Why should you care about this newfangled illness nicknamed “CIRS”? Well, because it just might mean the answer to your EM- your silver bullet- the reversal of EM symptoms.

You can read a lengthy account of my intertwined EM and CIRS road to recovery but let me give you the abbreviated version to solving my medical history here. About 25% of the population has a genetic HLA type that leaves them vulnerable to biotoxin illness. Biotoxin illness can be caused by many things- mold (aka- that basement with a musty smell), a tick bite from yesteryear, certain spider and snake bites, and several other ocean related things such as eating contaminated reef fish. Before you say, “Nope, that’s not me”, I want you to appreciate that as the old saying goes, “It’s complicated”. Most people living, working, or going to school in a moldy environment don’t even realize it. Furthermore, up to 80% of people bitten by a tick are unaware. For those that are genetically susceptible, their genetic make-up means the immune system cannot see the toxins and therefore cannot tag and remove them. The toxins are left circulating in the bile in a never-ending loop. This often silent disease process creates massive inflammation wreaking havoc on the body and pulling the trigger on other illnesses. Enter erythromelalgia… POTS, mast cell activation syndrome, fibromyalgia, or a vast array of other unpleasant maladies.

With the appropriate workup involving genetic propensity, symptom clusters, and blood markers, we can easily diagnose CIRS. What is confusing to the average physician due to the fact it involves multiple symptoms and more than one body system is fairly obvious to the trained eye. And once CIRS is identified, it can be treated. Treatment of my CIRS, which I developed due to living in a water damaged building, totally reversed my EM. I was disabled. I bathed on a shower chair. I used a scooter to get around yet am now in complete remission! I take steamy shower with glee. I walk on baking desert sand in 90-degree temps. I take my sweet time shopping in the grocery store (something only someone who has suffered the crucible of EM could appreciate). Painful flares are a distant memory. CIRS treatment combined with supportive measures aimed at sending the body a signal of safety led to a slow and steady resolution of symptoms. I am fully healed.
